Now we all know that everybody gets burned out on there job at some point and we just really need a break. No matter how much we love our job, we do sometimes lose our zeal and excitement for our jobs.
Recently I decided to take a week off of work to go on a mission trip to new Mexico with my church's youth group. I was gone for about a week and a half, and was actually kind of missing all the residents. I had to call every day to check on them. I was so ready for my next day of work... almost. I was still sceptical. I wasn't sure how much of me they would remember. I got my answer the second I walked through the door. Every single resident applauded me as I walked in the room. This is why i really love my job.
After you have established a good bond with each individual, it isn't often erased, or even forgotten. Now they might not always remember your name, but they won't forget how good, or bad, you treat them.
Always remember that however you treat them is how they will remember you. So treat them well and you will love your job as well as i do!

Forget About It!
Now I'm not all-knowing about Alzheimer's or dementia, but I'm hoping that somehow some way, this blog will assist someone who is taking care of a victim of Alzheimer's or dementia... Due to confidentiality issues, names will be changed in any stories used in this blog.
If you are a caretaker, you know how stressful and tiring it can be to take care of someone who can't remember who they are sometimes, or doesn't remember who you are... To have to introduce yourself often. However, I do hope that you realize how completely rewarding it is to take care of someone...
I work, as a caregiver and activities director, in a small assisted living facility that consists of eleven residents, each one with some form of dementia or Alzheimer's. As well as any physical ailments they might have. I realize that eleven residents doesn't sound like much, but when all eleven have forgotten who they are or where they are, it gets pretty hectic. Especially since each resident has a different personality and a different perspective on life... In all reality these people are a lot like the young children you would find at a daycare, no disrespect meant. But, in my experience, i have come to the conclusion that once someone hits a certain point in their dementia or Alzheimer's, they return to their childlike behaviors.
Well hopefully some day this blog will help someone somewhere...
